Dr Neil Basu is an academic rheumatologist who originally trained at the Universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Most recently he worked in the world-renowned Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Centre at the University of Michigan and he has returned home to now lead an innovative programme of research at the University of Glasgow. His research is entirely inspired by his clinical practice where he has always been drawn to areas of considerable need.
In particular, he leads a programme of work which investigates the epidemiology of Systemic Vasculitis. Inflammatory diseases such as systemic vasculitis are frequently overlooked due to their low prevalence. Patients feel marginalised and their true disease burden remains to be fully quantified. This programme of work seeks to apply descriptive, analytical and translational epidemiological methods to better quantify the burden and determinants of systemic vasculitis with view to informing and executing clinical trials.
